That’s worse than just being locked in a cell.

A few years later I had to spend a night in jail, and although they had the same toilet and mirror, I felt much better in the jail cell and slept soundly. At least if I behaved badly, they would treat me as an adult who needs to take responsibility for my own actions. In the hospital, they might punish you the same, a particular doctor or nurse might just dislike you, but everything was done “for your own good”. They pretend the exact same punishments are part of your therapeutic treatment in the psych ward. You are not “held responsible” for your actions because you are more like a child than an adult.

You might think I would resent some young, innocent person who was reveling in a diagnosis. But that’s weird enough for me to suspect that if someone’s been through the process of being diagnosed crazy and is happy about it, they probably really are crazy! Just think of all the insulting, humiliating words we use every day. I’ve just used “crazy”. There are also nuts, mad, insane, psychotic, unbalanced, disturbed, loco, cuckoo: all these are used every day to suggest the mentally ill are less than human.

This is a controversial subject because one camp thinks you should go no contact with the parents.

These are people who are either not going to be psychologically safe around their parents and this is fair enough. Or they are people who have not healed their wounds and are still very angry. There might be another reason, but this is what I have learned.

There is another camp that has healed and understand that the parent was abused in their childhood in a very sad way, and that is why they became a narcissist.
